So you’ve probably heard of midcentury modern, but what the heck is midpractical modern?
Not a style, but a lifestyle
While you may not have heard of midpractical modern, I’m fairly certain you’ve heard of midcentury modern. Here’s an easy way to note the difference:
Midcentury Modern is a style.
If you were designing a room to be midcentury modern, you would choose furniture, paint colors, materials, decorations and lighting that would blend together to make up an aesthetic look.
Midpractical Modern is a lifestyle.
If you were designing your life to be midpractical modern, you would make decisions around time, money, and energy everyday that help you balance your responsibilities, goals and happiness.
The root of Midpractical Modern
I’m a word junkie so let’s break down the term ‘midpractical modern’ to its core. Here are some definitions of each root word origin, according to dictionary.com:
MID
being at or near the middle point of:
in mid autumn.
PRACTICAL
mindful of the results, usefulness, advantages or disadvantages, etc., of action or procedure.
MODERN
of or relating to present and recent time; not ancient or remote: modern city life.
What it is and what it isn’t
So when you think about Mid + Practical + Modern, essentially it’s an approach to living in today’s world in a way that is moderate and balanced.
Or you can look at it from a different angle of what it’s not:
It’s not about being uber-rational and making the minimalistic decision every time. It’s also not about making lofty, unrealistic choices at every opportunity.
What it is about is living in that place in the middle.
Like sitting in an air-conditioned room to avoid overheating, but wanting a seat by the sunlit window so you don’t get too cold. It’s skipping your daily Starbucks habit for a month so you can splurge your savings on a new espresso maker for your home.
It’s walking to the restaurant instead of calling a Lyft – it might take more time, but will save you a few bucks and burn a few calories in the process. Or it’s calling the Lyft and not walking because you know you’ll be a sweaty mess by the time you arrive for dinner!
Everyone’s midpractical is a little different. But what can be the same for all – once you find yours, it can help you live in moderation and enjoy a fulfilling and abundant life.
Who is Midpractical Modern for?
Do you feel like there’s always something— whether it’s time, money, responsibilities or energy—that prevents you from taking that trip, learning the thing, starting the project, or accomplishing your tasks and goals?
Do you have a wishlist of places to travel, things to learn, projects to do, or habits to form that is constantly growing but you feel like you never check anything off the list?
Or maybe you have so much on your list that you don’t know where or how to start, so you just…don’t?
Have no fear, you are not alone. That’s why midpractical modern was manifested into this world (cue clouds parting, sun shining and choir singing).
A midpractical modern lifestyle is ultimately a way to balance the functional and fun, plan for the time, funds, or effort you need to accomplish your tasks and goals, and adjust and tweak the approach to what works for you.
